It’s no secret that Merlot can be a fickle varietal – both in the vineyard, and in the glass. That said, we have been fortunate to have produced fantastic vintages in the past – thanks in no small part to our higher altitude and cooler climate site.
Despite our penchant for success with Merlot, 2014 is not typically a vintage that is revered amongst South African wine lovers. Fortunately for us, our micro-climate in the Banghoek (and specifically around Rondekop) contributed to a great vintage for Merlot in 2014. The success of this vintage was re-iterated recently when the team re-assessed it during a benchmark vertical. Although several Merlot vintages were holding up very well, the 2014 was still incredibly vibrant and young in the glass.
A very slight terracotta tinge on the rim indicates the passing of some time, yet the aromatics are practically bursting out of the glass with rhubarb, mint leaf and loganberries. A lively acidity packaged within the elegant tannins makes for a great mouthfeel, enhanced fully by a lingering finish.
To mark this very special Merlot, we have decided to release 24 x Merlot 2014 Magnum bottles at R1335 per bottle. Contact megan@oldenburgvineyards.com to secure your bottles.
