As we start to make our way into Spring, it’s a great time to release another white wine from the Oldenburg Vineyards stable. The Chenin Blanc 2021 has been patiently awaiting release, and we are excited to share the next iteration of Oldenburg Chenin Blanc with you.
The 2021 vintage was a much cooler year, bringing lovely acidity to the wine. Nic put the wine in a combination of Austrian foudre as well as French oak barrels, and increased the overall time in wood by one month – to 11 months total. The nose has a beautifully enticing lemon-lime zest, that is so characteristic of Chenin Blanc from the Banghoek, with some overripe naartjie and hints of floral tones, like lilies.
The palate possesses a refreshing acidity, with hints of fennel, brioche and vanilla, ending in a long, luscious finish. This wine is a brilliant site-specific illustration of what Chenin Blanc in the Banghoek is. It is eminently drinkable now, but will develop beautiful complexity over time.
