Review – Stone Axe 2019

The second Rondekop release taken from vine to wine under the care of Nic van Aarde, has been hotly anticipated. The Stone Axe Syrah has come to represent an elegant, stylish expression of Syrah, and the 2019 has only elevated that expectation.

The wine has an intense, royal purple hue. The nose is filled with promise, delivering familiar yet nuanced tones of earthiness, star anise, cloves and red chili flakes. The palate follows up with savoury notes of black pepper and lavendar, rounded off with mulberries. As we have come to expect of the Stone Axe, the tannins are plush and luscious, the acidity mouth-watering and the finish long and eminently pleasant.

The elegance of this wine is undeniable. Already drinking beautifully, it can safely be put away to rest and develop for another 13 to 15 years.
