Chardonnay | The Library Collection

Continuing the celebration of Chardonnay, this month we are taking a peek at not only the Trophy-winning Oldenburg Vineyards Chardonnay 2021, but also three older vintages, that showcase the ageing potential of this popular cultivar.

The Chardonnay 2021 is a supreme expression of the wonderful potential the cultivar shows in the Banghoek Valley. The nose draws you in, with vibrant notes of quince, naartjie and apricot. Oak integrates gently, with the lightest hint of vanilla on the palate. A juicy acidity carries through to a zesty finish. Delicious now, this vintage will age gracefully over the next 15 years. R260 per bottle.

The Chardonnay 2015 hails from arguably one of the best vintage years South Africa has seen in recent memory. Even after seven years, the wine still shows vibrant lemon and lime characteristics, with a slight minerality on the palate, balanced acidity and a satisfying finish. R445 per bottle.

Originating in a challenging vintage, the Chardonnay 2016 showcases a profile of honeysuckle, orange blossom, apricot and charred citrus. Hints of lime, oranges and caramel on the palate, leading to a long and lasting finish. This wine can age for another 2-3 years. R415 per bottle.

Following a long, dry season, the Chardonnay 2017 was made from berries with a high colour and flavour intensity. Aromas of lemon rind and grapefruit are prominent, with green apple, honeysuckle and lemon on the palate. It retains a crisp acidity and a lasting finish, with hints of brioche. R390 per bottle.
