Review – Chardonnay 2020

The Banghoek valley in general – and Oldenburg in particular – provide exceptional conditions for growing superb quality Chardonnay. Grapes for the 2020 vintage come from two sites – one with rich, alluvial soils and another with weathered Table Mountain sandstone. These uniquely different sites contribute to the overall complexity of the wines. Spontaneous fermentation took two months to complete, whereafter the wine spent 10 months maturing in 228 L French oak barrels.

The 2020 vintage has a rich, golden hue. The nose carries a slight flintiness, with inviting aromas of peach, apricot and honey melon, alongside an evocative hint of freshly baked brioche. The palate complements the nose beautifully, with intense notes of quince, papaya, luquat and ginger. Well-rounded mouthfeel and vibrant acidity create a long, smooth finish.

The Oldenburg Vineyards Chardonnay 2020 will be available from 1 March 2021, at R220 per bottle from The Tasting room and online. Contact to order, or for more information.
