Delving back into The Library Collection this month, we are discovering the sublime Oldenburg Vineyards Merlot 2013. Merlot can be a tricky cultivar to work with, but it has found a very suitable home on the slopes of Rondekop. The 2013 shows its age with a slightly brick-red colour. The nose is still vibrant, and jumps out of the glass with aromas of pine needles, forest floor and fennel.
Tertiary characteristics have developed nicely – including leathery notes – but there is still plenty of fruit to be found, including luscious plum and red fruit flavours. Time has been kind to this wine: it has softened the tannins beautifully, and the finish is smooth as silk – this wine will drink superbly for another 3 years.
The Oldenburg Vineyards Merlot 2013 is available at R380 per bottle. Contact orderwine@oldenburgvineyards.com to order, or for more information on the larger format and Library Collection wines.
